Kitesurfing at Paje is the postcard lagoon of East Africa: a coral reef 1.5 to 2 km out keeps the water flat and turquoise, the sandy bottom stays waist-deep over huge areas at mid tide, and the beach is lined with kite centres — the Cristal Resort sits right in the heart of it. Plan sessions around the tide: the inner lagoon empties at dead low and chops up at high. Between them, the seaweed farms, the beach bars and the dhow trips take over.
