America's kitesurfing mecca is a sandbar in the Atlantic. At Cape Hatteras, the Pamlico Sound serves waist-deep flat water the size of a small sea on one side and the ocean waits two minutes across the road on the other, from March to November. The resorts in Waves and Rodanthe put the school on the property and the launch at the door — which is why the Outer Banks became the place American kiteboarding grew up.
